Barclays Trading Places celebrates men and women who have turned their lives around by setting up a business.
Maybe you were forced out of work by illness or family responsibilities. Perhaps you became dependent on benefits and lost confidence in finding a job again? Or maybe it meant correcting a wrong with a right - for example, overcoming an addiction or picking up the pieces after a brush with the law.
For this years entrants there are some great prizes to be won – not to mention opportunities to gain valuable publicity to give your business that extra push.

Being a Barclays Trading Places finalist is not about being better than anyone else – it’s the acknowledgement of the success you have made of your life.
These government-backed awards, presented in association with Microsoft and with a range of key business supporters, feature practical examples of people who have taken control of their lives by deciding to go it alone.
Secretary of State for Business, Lord Mandelson said:
“An enterprising culture can create jobs and transform communities – all of which is vital during these uncertain economic times.
“Through initiatives such as Barclay's 'Trading Places' Awards we can honour the next wave of entrepreneurs who have overcome personal barriers, driven change and made their ideas a reality.
“I would like to congratulate all the nominees and wish them all the luck in their careers”.
Our last year’s winners include a couple who triumphed over illness and redundancy to establish a cider-making business in Wales and a builder who started a successful mobile discotheque business after a devastating car crash left him paralysed.

Launching Trading Places 2009, Barclays Marketing Director for Local Business, John Davis, said:
”Trading Places is a celebration of businesses that have struggled through adversity, which is even more relevant today in our turbulent economic times and have turned their lives around for them and their families.
“We are delighted to have this opportunity of celebrating the inspiring achievement of these individuals whilst highlighting an increasingly important sector of the business community – the sole traders and small business operations that underpin our economy.”
